AIRLINES FROM THE PAST
Today, as group 1, we will talk about the beginnings of some of today’s airlines through our research, these will consist of airlines that started between 1920-1945. To begin with, we will start with Turkish Airlines. There is no doubt that they significant position for Turkey, the country we live in. Turkish Airlines was established in 1933. At that time, the company had only 5 aircraft and less than 30 employees. The name of the company, which we now know as Turkish Airlines, was “State Airlines” until 1955. The logo of the company was inspired by wild goose which can fly at the altitude of 9000 meters. THY, made their first international flight in 1947 and it was from İstanbul to Athens. Having purchased 5-piece Viscount 794 when we arrived in 1958, Turkish Airlines stepped into a new era by switching from piston engines to jet engines. Company doubled its capital which was 200.000.000₺ with the desire of being a pioneer in the industry. Currently, Turkish Airlines has been selected as the airline that flies to the most countries in the world with its high-tech and environment-friendly flights that offer the highest level of comfort. Now we would like to talk about the oldest airline in the world, which still exists today. “K.L.M.”, an abbreviation for Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij voor Nederland a Colonial. are initials (also known as Royal Dutch Airlines). This airline is directly linked to Dutch aviation history. On October 7, 1919, a group of financiers and bankers under the direction of 30-year-old Albert Plesman established KLM. On May 17, 1920, the airline launched its first flight between Amsterdam and London. By September, KLM had extended its service area by adding flights to Hamburg, Germany, and Copenhagen, Denmark. In other words, KLM quickly became one of the largest airlines in the world at the turn of the 20th century in terms of routes served. In addition, KLM holds the record for both the longest continuously operating airline in the world and the oldest continuously operating airline. Commercial aviation in the Netherlands began soon after World War I, as it did in most major European nations. Early on, KLM flew Dutch-built aircraft like the four-seater Fokker F.2. KLM had a reputation for providing excellent service, both in terms of the punctuality of their flights and the comfort of their onboard facilities. The late 1920s were difficult for KLM as they were for the majority of European airlines. The battle with Imperial Airways to control the extreme reaches of the Dutch and British colonial empires in the middle of the 1930s is one of the most notable chapters in KLM’s history. The competition began a decade earlier when both companies explored possible routes into Asia. Today KLM is one of the most valuable airlines in European aviation history. It cannot be done without mentioning. Aeroflot, one of the oldest airlines in the world, was officially founded on February 9, 1923. It started operations in the Soviet Union on July 15, 1923. Aeroflot, the largest airline in Russia, has IATA code SU and ICAO code AFL. Aeroflot, which is among the 20 most profitable airlines in the world, became a member of the airline alliance SkyTeam in 2006. In this way, Aeroflot increased its connecting flight destination and became the 10th airline company to become a member of this alliance. While the company has Soviet aircraft, it has recently decided to renew its fleet and mainly uses Boeing and Airbus production passenger aircraft. 51% of Aeroflot is owned by the Russian state. Aeroflot, which is under the guarantee of the Russian state, employs an estimated 31 thousand people. There are also many fatal accidents in the history of Aeroflo. However, the rapid rise of the company in the last 10 years shows that it has reached a very advanced level in terms of security. We would like to talk about Cubana Airlines, one of the oldest airlines in the world, this airport, which was established on October 8, 1929 and started its operations in 1930, actually started service as Cuba’s national carrier charter carrier and flight school. In 1930, it started to make flights to the places around it. He first flew to Miami in 1945. It was originally a subsidiary of Pan American World Airways and later Cubana, a private company owned by Cuban investors, wholly owned by the Cuban government since May 1959. Cubana airlines is a founding member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the International Aviation Telecommunication Association (SITA) and the International Latin American Air Transport Association (AITAL). Cubana’s early fleet used Curtiss Robin, amphibian Sikorsky-38, Ford Trimotor, and Lockheed Martin (L-10) aircraft. In May 1959, Cuba’s new revolutionary government decided to take over Cuba, expropriating all its investors. Private passenger airline Aerovías Q and private cargo carriers Cuba Aeropostal and Expreso Aéreo Interamericano were merged into Cubana, which was later rebranded as Empresa Consolidada Cubana de Aviación and was originally an 80% government investment; It became operational on June 27, 1961. The airline had expanded its planned transatlantic services earlier that year. Prague to the European route network that only includes Madrid. Cubana airlines still remains an active high-profit airline mainly in Central America, South America and North America.
